Girls Are Powerful Organization
Founder and CEO
To encounter Shawntan is to encounter a paradigm shift in the way you view yourself, and the way you view the world. A visionary and conscientious thought leader, inspirational speaker, workshop facilitator and mentor, Shawntan Howell is firmly committed to developing others. After a conversation with her daughter, she noticed a change in her daughter's self-esteem and wanted to surround her with positive messages. Understanding that a girl’s self-esteem, her perception of herself and the way others see her, was key to their development she was driven to act and created Girls Are Powerful. A personal transformation movement that engages and empowers girls to embrace their unique individuality through affirmations, self-reflection, and positive self-talk. Our holistic approach to empowerment is what makes our brand innovative and different. Our engaging workshops are designed to empower girls to embrace their unique identity and own their personal power.
A native of Chicago, IL, Shawntan plowed through obstacles, determined to make more of her life than that her surroundings offered. Pushed by her mother who exposed her to different, enriching life experiences and ensured she was educated outside of her community, Shawntan holds a B.A. in Computer Science and Statistics from the University of Minnesota-Morris and an M.A. in Leadership from Augsburg College.

Girls Are Powerful activities has received fantastic support and coverage by Fox News. Shawntan has been featured on Twin Cities Live as a part of Wonder Women with Elizabeth Ries and by Chris Olsen in My Founder Story as well as featured by Katie Steller in the Steller Kindness Project. She has also been selected as a finalist in the TeamWomen Wavemakers awards in 2018 and the winner of the Be The Change Volunteer award by Hands on Twin Cities.
