Scaling Within: Expand Your Inner Capacity to Sustain Growth
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

**This session sold out after it debuted at TCSW18 and is back by popular demand. If you haven't attended this session before, this is your opportunity. If you have, here's your chance for a refresher:

It’s one thing to have a great idea or a vision that you want to bring forth into the world. It’s another thing entirely to:

- Actually grow a business.
- Build a functional team.
- Manage endless drama from clients and employees.
- Deal with the countless other challenges that arise along the journey.

In order to successfully scale your venture, you must first learn to scale within. You must expand your internal capacity to lead yourself and others well as your company develops over time. As your business grows, you must make updates to your own inner operating system in order to grow with it.

In this session, you will learn a simple but cutting-edge framework from the field of neurobiology that will expand your capacity to:

- Act from intention rather than reaction with increased self-awareness
- Identify and begin to overcome internal barriers and limiting mindsets
- Make clear and rational decisions without feeling overwhelmed or withdrawn
- Effectively communicate with colleagues and clients in the midst of crucial conversations, maintaining both honesty and respect

Whether you are currently scaling your business, are in the initial stages of a great idea, part of a team, or anywhere in between, this is a life-changing tool that will positively impact every area of your life even beyond succeeding in business.

Analytics-Powered Growth Strategies for Startups
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Your digital product has users, but growth has stalled. You’ve tried ads, blog posts and even new product features, but none of these efforts have truly moved the needle. What next steps can you take to grow?

In this event, we’ll help startups develop analytics-powered growth strategies that will help them efficiently grow their businesses.

Specifically, we’ll help attendees:
—Develop tailored, unique growth goals that are specific to their businesses needs
—Define metrics that will truly measure their progress towards these distinct goals
—Use AB tests to responsibly evaluate which messages, features and UI boost key metrics
—Understand the difference between product vs. marketing vs. vanity metrics
—Observe user behavior to formulate—then test—detailed hypotheses

Hosted by Modern Logic, this event will help startup and product leaders who are ready to apply analytics to their decision-making processes and grow more efficiently.

Limited Capacity seats available

We hear about them every day – Website Breaches and other cyber-attacks. The reality is websites will continue to be hacked and hackers are not going away. Unfortunately, small and medium sized businesses are at a great disadvantage and have the most to lose with fewer resources to recover. And many small and medium sized businesses whose websites have been hacked are unaware and confidential information is being exposed and utilized by bad actors.

This presentation will inform, educate, and provide helpful insights into the importance of protecting your website against cyber-attacks. We’ll tell you how to avoid the mistakes made by many business owners that leave their websites vulnerable to hackers.

We’ve found that the overwhelming number of website breaches that occur are preventable and we’ve seen the business and personal impact of a breach. We’ll share case studies that will provide valuable insight into the importance of website security. We’ll also give you the steps that can be taken to minimize risks.

In addition, this presentation will provide insight into the role that Google plays and will enable business owners to understand that if Google identifies a website as being breached, the site can be penalized or worse. A breach can significantly impact your marketing, sales and customer service efforts.

9 Ways to Fail as an Entrepreneur: How to Avoid Going to Court (Private Session)
Limited Capacity seats available

Few startups budget for attorneys. Most entrepreneurs prefer to rely on their own common sense and creativity to avoid legal problems. Small business owners tend to wait for problems to escalate before getting legal help.

We get it. A combination of limited budget and ignorance-is-bliss leads most of us to want to stay away from those pesky lawyers. Until we have to. Self-help will take you so far and that's OK.

We posit that businesses often shutter, in large part, because entrepreneurs underestimate the intricacies of the law. After all, it only takes one slip to get into hot water.

We are here to help you! We want you to thrive.

Come learn 9 common mistakes entrepreneurs make when starting and running their business!

Female Founders Who Kick Analytics As*!
Limited Capacity filling up

All founders need to understand more about data and analytics than ever before.  In this intimate, coffee fueled panel, we will explore the relationship between female founders and their connections to data/analytics.  Tips and tricks for understanding what to pay attention early and what to let go. Providing a starting point on the trail of insights, because in the end, that is what data and analytics should be all about: 1) what do I learn about my customers, and 2) how do I leverage that to grow.  The panel will be moderated by Dennis Still, from Bigfoot Analytics, who has spent years in the startup ecosystem here in the Twin Cities helping other startups with analytics and insights.  This incredible panel will include Dori Graff & Mary Fallon, Co-Founders of Kidizen, Amanda LaGrange, CEO at Tech Dump, Laura Madsen, Founding Partner at Route Twenty Five, and potentially a few more surprise guests. The event is being held at Amore Coffee just across the High Bridge in St. Paul.  Easy parking around the venue and public transit stops right out front.  Should be a great event and lots of things to consider as you think about your own business or department within an existing one in regard to analytics.  Morning snacks will be provided along with amazing coffee.

Sprint Before You Sell | An Interactive Storytelling Workshop
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Back by popular demand, one of the most talked-about workshops from the last two years of TCSW returns to WeWork!

If someone asked your mom, your best friend, and your significant other about your startup, how many different answers would they get?

Do they know what your startup product or service does?

Would they help communicate the value you provide?

Know specifically who your startup helps?

If you answered no to any or all of these questions, then this workshop is for you.

Because before you start investing in your marketing and sales efforts, you need the foundation for them to stand on.

And that foundation is a clear and compelling story.

The world gets noisier every day and there is only so much attention that can be won by startups that already face an uphill battle when it comes to awareness and credibility.

WITHOUT a clear and compelling story, odds are very good that any efforts to grow your startup will not succeed and you'll get lost in the noise.

WITH a clear and compelling story, you can close deals faster, create the momentum you need to get to the next stage of growth, and have your mom evangelizing to everyone she meets on your behalf. (Don't underestimate this powerful referral channel!)

Join us for this workshop as Patrick Hodgdon, founder of Story Sprints, will walk you through an exercise to tell your story in a powerful way: by building a foundation for it using only 9 words.

Twin Cities Startup Week Sprint Story/Hackathon - creating a thriving Minnesota for everyone
Limited Capacity seats available

Apply your start-up skills for humanity - You are invited to a three-part series designed to develop and pilot solutions to address the systemic inequities in Minnesota. These are systems designed to prevent communities from thriving.

The disparities in education, health, housing, and wealth that occur in our state are unacceptable; preventing the state from reaching its true potential.

It was recently reported that 1 in 5 Minnesotans are reported to be living in poverty, against the backdrop of what some say is the epicenter of food and healthcare.

A sense of urgency - We are taking a risk and trying something new - a design sprint/hackathon focused on disrupting the status quo by applying our collective start-up skills to pilot 4 new ideas, one every 90 days, testing the potential to “move the needle” in serving our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.

This is part 1 of a 3 part series entitled, how did we get here?  A panel discussion about what is preventing us from thriving?
“Lurking beneath every goal are dangerous assumptions. The longer those assumptions remain unexamined, the greater the risk.” - Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky & Braden Kowitz, Google Ventures.

Birth of a Social Enterprise
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Curious about social entrepreneurship and how social impact is defined? Meet the new cohort of FINNOVATION Fellows and hear about the first stage of their market research - understanding the causes and context of the social issue they wish to address with their start-up. Social entrepreneurs articulate their "theory of change" which explains the logic of why certain outcomes can be expected to happen with certain inputs. This work layers with more traditional market research and customer insight work, but helps entrepreneurs be clear on the social impact they want to achieve and how they plan to evaluate progress and identify success. Each of the nine Fellows will give a short presentation, followed by an opportunity for questions. The FINNOVATION Fellowship is a nine-month program that runs from mid-September to mid-June, supporting social entrepreneurs with curriculum, mentorship, and a living stipend as they define and launch their early stage ventures.

Presentations will be held at FINNOVATION Lab, 817 5th Ave S, Suite 400, Minneapolis, 55404.

This is part 2 of a 3 part series, a workshop/ideation/team forming to work on your ideas,

Keeping an Entrepreneurial Culture Through Growth
The vibe of the entrepreneurial workplace is a key part of what attracts top talent. This culture is easily established when a company is small, but does it need to change as the company grows? The short answer is “not much” if leadership makes it a priority. It takes more than just a cool office space and video games in the break room; an entrepreneurial culture thrives and remains when people feel their input matters and collaboration is the norm. During this panel session, learn from executives who have led their companies from startup through IPOs and ongoing growth, but retained their dynamic cultures.

An Overview of the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Programs: Non-Dilutive Funding to Research, Develop and Commercialize New Products, Services and Processes for Worldwide Markets
Limited Capacity seats available

Join us to learn about two federal programs that offer non-dilutive research and development funding for startups and small businesses launching new technologies with strong potential for commercialization.

Successfully launching an unproven technology requires years of hard work and millions of dollars. And because women-owned firms confront unique barriers to investment, their pathway is even more challenging.

The federal government offers two critical non-dilutive funding programs that support research and development in startups and existing small businesses with technologies in science, technology, and engineering that have strong potential for commercialization. There is now an increased focused on ensuring women-owned firms participate in these programs.

The $3B Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs offer startups and small businesses to turn their technologies into products, services and/or processes for domestic and international markets. Also known as America’s Seed Fund, the SBIR and STTR programs are the largest sources of early-stage capital for technology commercialization in the United States.

MNSBIR, a division of the Minnesota High Tech Association, is the designated resource in Minnesota to assist seed, early-stage, emerging and existing small businesses to strategically access SBIR/STTR funding. MNSBIR services are free to Minnesota firms through its funding from the Small Business Administration and the Department of Employment and Economic Development.

Presenter

Ms. Pat Dillon has facilitated more than $100M in SBIR/STTR funding since 1994. Pat is responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of MNSBIR and its services. In 1999 Pat was awarded the prestigious SBA Tibbetts Award, a national award for excellence in the SBIR/STTR Programs, and she is a 2001 recipient of the City Business’ 25 Most Innovative Woman Award (now the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal). She has served on commercialization review committees at the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture and was the principal investigator of an Office of Naval Research contract for SBIR outreach in a five-state region for the first-ever SWIFT Tour (SBIR/STTR Where Innovation Focuses on Technology).

Pat is a retired United States Navy Commander with 40 years of service (active and reserve), aviation and intelligence communities. She is a combat veteran having served 10 months in Kabul, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Pat earned an MBA and a BS in Business Administration from Winona State University, Winona, MN.

The 2019 ConnectUP! State of the Work Report
Limited Capacity filling up

Last year, Morgan Stanley released “The Trillion Dollar Blindspot” a report highlighting the skewed capital landscape against women-owned and POC-owned businesses, despite investors perceiving it as balanced. The report concluded that this gross imbalance is costing the nation in output and a missed opportunity of $4.4 trillion dollars.

But it is not only the nation that is impacted -- it’s local economies. The ConnectUP! State of the Work (SOW) report explores the systemic barriers in the entrepreneur ecosystem from accessing capital to influential networks which facilitate business growth from the perspective of the underestimated entrepreneur. Through qualitative and quantitative data, the SOW lays the groundwork for more rigorous, targeted data collection to better understand, align, and actively mobilize networks, resources and capital in a way that is accessible, equitable, flexible and culturally responsible.

Learn about the actions required to achieve an inclusive ecosystem for all business owners.

Funding Your Start-Up: Beyond VCs, Angels, and Accelerators- Breakfast Edition
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Despite headlines involving big bets in venture capital, crowdfunding, accelerators, and angel investing, the number one source of funding for start-ups is personal savings and credit.
Come hear how to manage your whole financial picture - both at home and work - as you launch and grow your business.

Join Village Bank’s panel of financial industry experts as they dispel common business banking myths, discuss common financing options, and provide valuable financial tips for entrepreneurs just like you!

This event will provide a platform for emerging business leaders to ask questions they may not know to ask, and allows attendees the chance to connect with local banking experts and fellow entrepreneurs alike.

Panelists will be diving deep into discussion topics including:
- What role does a community bank have in your entrepreneurial path, and how they can be a gift to entrepreneurs and the community as a whole
- Demystifying Small Business Administration (SBA) lending; misconceptions will be addressed, benefits will be highlighted, and tips will be shared to determine whether this option would benefit you
- What is Treasury Management? How and when to know which financial products to leverage to mitigate operational and financial risk – it is never too early to start planning in order to safeguard the future of your business
- Pitfalls to avoid as you balance the management of your personal finances alongside your business finances

Whether you’re just starting up or gearing up for growth, this panel conversation is for you.

Using Design to Trick People into Thinking your App is Faster Than it is
Limited Capacity seats available

People expect mobile apps to be fast.

That means the Web Services powering the mobile app you're building need to be fast.

But if you have worked on, well, any app ever, you know that "speedy and reliable" are not how most mobile app developers describe the Web Services they're asked to use.

So, what to do if you're the mobile designer/developer, and not the Web Services engineer? In other words, what if you can't fix the root of the problem, and you're stuck just implementing what's handed down to you?

In this talk, Mike will share various UI/UX design techniques to trick people (in a good way) into thinking your app is faster than it actually is.

This is a design-focused talk for mobile product managers, mobile designers, and mobile engineers who like to create things that don't suck.

Setting Your Clean-Tech Startup for Success in Solar and Energy Efficiency
Limited Capacity seats available

The clean energy technology market is as hot as ever. Solar energy is the cheapest new source of electricity. Batteries and storage have reached critical mass. Electrical vehicles are gaining market penetration. Nearly every building owner is pursuing aggressive energy savings technologies. And climate-oriented funds are scaling up investments in innovative technology companies.

The clean-tech space is exciting. To succeed, clean-tech startups face even more challenges than most startups. They must navigate the fluid energy policy landscape and the incumbent advantage of large utilities. And for solar and battery innovators, they must secure customers and capital even faster than other entrepreneurs.

Avisen Legal's informal roundtable will feature successful clean-tech startups who have blazed a path for others, alongside advisors and attorneys with deep experience helping clean-tech entrepreneurs overcome these many hurdles - and achieve extraordinary impact in the process.

This is part 3 of a 3 part series in which we will select which ideas will move forward to pilot. Up to a maximum of 4 - 90 day pilot ideas. Updated every 90 days, with a recap provided during TCSW 2020.

Simplifying the Complexity of the Gig Economy
Limited Capacity seats available

The gig economy, sometimes referred to as the sharing economy, allows people to benefit from the services offered to them via online platforms and/or to provide their own offerings to be purchased or rented from the online marketplace. Consumers benefit from the ease of use, affordable rates and access to peer reviews. From interchanging of flats to shared cars, from ‘crowdfunding’ to ‘coworking’, from microlending to P2P-finance.

This new economy represents a profound and important change in our world that impacts the whole international landscape. Put REST to Rest: Moving to GraphQL
Limited Capacity seats available

REST has served software engineers well for many years, but it’s starting to show its age. Thankfully, something better has come along, we’ve put it in production, and we’re here to tell you about it!
We’re talking about GraphQL. We’ll be answering questions like these:
- What is GraphQL?
- Why are we using it?
- How are we using it?
- How did we implement it?
- What tools do we use with it?

Come join us to learn about this exciting new technology.
